Context
Immediately to the east of the school is the University of California Santa Cruz. The University, known for its beautiful site, opened in 1965 and grew, one college at a time, to its current enrollment of about 10,000 students. Undergraduates comprise 90 percent of the students and are affiliated with one of the UCSC colleges (Cowell, Stevenson, Crown, Merrill, Porter, Kresge, Oakes, and Eight).
The eight UCSC collegeseach a separate community with its own buildings and administrationare built around a core of shared university facilities. These include the main library, performing arts buildings, visual arts studios, classrooms, and the natural sciences complex.
